blowing coat
Chels is not a Shiba Inu, but she's often mistaken for one. Like a Shiba Inu, she has a doublecoat and sheds her undercoat twice a year. This is often referred to as "blowing coat." I call it a fur explosion.
Last night when I got back from NYC, I noticed that Chels was starting to blow coat. Giveaways: extra large tumbleweed furballs blowing around the apartment, tufted haunches (the fur that's ready to go often clumps together in tufts), and the cloud of fur floating around her. Even though this is approximately the 17th time I've witnessed Chels blow her coat, last night I was still afraid I was going to be left with a bald dog once I started brushing her and pulling out clumps and the pile of fur around us kept growing. We never get to bald and Chels doesn't even look any different after she's blown her coat which usually takes a couple of weeks of daily brushing and a bath or two.

Now that is a dense undercoat! Those pictures of the Shiba's look like sheep have been shorn, but there's the dog looking perfectly normal. Amazing. I guess these pups don't get cold easily except perhaps these times of year, eh?
Argh. Just woke up - got to sleep in because I'm flying to St. Louis today - and in my sleepiness put a greengrocer's apostrophe in Shibas. Alas! I can find no way to edit my comment to correct this egregious error!
My eyes are fuzzy right now and when I read the title, I read "Blowing Goat"!! I am really glad I read the entire post or I would have had a very different opinion of the writer!! =)
that might be worse than owning a cat. you should stuff some handmade pillows with that fur.
Or I could have it spun into yarn for a sweater!
Coat blowing is awesome.
Woh, yarn? That's nutty. You should make Shiba Coat for Shiba.
BTW, beautiful dog!!
thanks!
Ooohhhh, so pretty! A very beautiful dog and an interesting natural occurance.
Ah, the dreaded coat blowing. Our solution for our Keeshond is to just not brush it out. It'll get stuck in her coat, thus, not tumbleweeding around the house. Perhaps it's not the best solution, but it's ours.
