library reading
I was excited to check out today's opening of the new Mission Bay library -- the first new branch in 40 years! -- today. It's a nice space and convenient enough to work and home that weaning myself off of Amazon.com + prime shipping should be painless.
Books I borrowed today:

I bet library cards have come a long way, too!
They have bar codes! And there's even a self check-out machine/computer, and it's easier to scan your library books than groceries.
This is probably a really dorky thing to say, but: libraries have always been really exciting, to me. I actually used to have my parents drop me off at the library when I was a teenager and they never thought I was actually staying there, but instead using it as a cover for somewhere much cooler to hang out. Before the web, the library was my wikipedia.
And, getting things for free is just so cool.
There's tons of great stuff in the collection too, DVDs and books on CD, for example.
Oh, and the online catalog has some nice features as well. ;)
(I might know one or two things about that software...)
We have a library outside our front door and it’s the best thing ever.
For the Amazon to SF Libarry transition, you’ll love this: self link
Don't forget you can request things from other branches from the website and renew them online.
The collection of old photos is cool too. Check out this 1965 shopper in Chinatown: http://sflib1.sfpl.org:82/search/Xlily+lee
You can search for pictures from a particular year too:

Merlin: excellent hack! Thanks for the tip.
Oh, excellent hack... thank you.
